Smart Kids

During the 10 min. break for one of my classes I saw one of my students write characters stroke by stroke and he was learning how to write 唱. I was surprised they were just learning that character since it's a common word meaning "sing." That's how they learn how to write characters and that's how I learned Chinese when I was 14 in California but I always complained about it. No wonder my Taiwanese teacher was so strict on me. I was extremely lazy compared to these students! I was really surprised when I saw my student do his homework during break and I asked him if it was hard and he said no. I mean, it makes sense to teach the students that way because you have to learn how to write the characters but I can't believe that they are learning Chinese while learning English. These kids are so smart and sadly pressured!

It's incredible how much time they spend at school. Tonight I was doing private tutoring with one student and I honestly think he was in school from 7am to 8:30pm. He was actually really behaved and I asked him if he was tired and he said no. He never complained and our lesson was for 2 1/2 hrs!
